Photo Tip: Perspective
We have loved watching your photo contest entries come in! Don’t miss out on the Babbonis Photo Contest that ends on March 18th. This week for our photo tip – we want to talk to you about perspective. Changing the perspective on what you’re photographing can ultimately change the entire feel of a photograph.
So…what is perspective anyway?
Webster Dictionary describes perspective as the technique or process of representing on a plane or curved surface the spatial relation of objects as they might appear to the eye. Also going to to explain how perspective is a visible scene; especially : one giving a distinctive impression of distance. The appearance to the eye of objects in respect to their relative distance and positions. Now that we know what the “technical” definition is..in simpler terms, perspective is things seem smaller the farther away they are, relative to their size.
How does perspective apply to photography?
To increase your understanding of how to use perspective in photography really is one of those things that come to you the more you practice and experiment with it. If you have a DSLR you can experiment with your different lenses to change your perspective using your wide angle, normal and telephoto lenses. Remember however, just changing your lens wont ultimately change your perspective, be sure to change your standing position as well.
How can you utilize perspective with your cellphone camera? Well you can institute perspective by changing your physical position toward your subject. You can also change the distance from your background and subject to change the look and feel as well. This doesn’t mean just moving closer or further away from your subject but also moving vertically as well – shoot from above and get down low!
Be deliberate and think through your shot – practice makes perfect! If you feel like your shot could be “more” but aren’t quite sure how to change the shot – move your feet, bend down, or grab a ladder!
Here are some examples to illustrate different perspective in photos.
Have fun trying different perspectives and enter your photos in our contest! Next week we will be announcing our photography contest winner.
